<p><persName ref="prs:hammond">Hammond</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> to transmit, for <persName ref="prs:grey_g">Grey</persName>’s information, a copy of <persName ref="prs:crampton_jft">Crampton</persName>'s despatch on the ongoing boundary dispute on <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan Island</placeName>.</p>
<p>The minutes ask that <persName ref="prs:crampton_jft">Crampton</persName>’s despatch be withheld from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> and the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>, but that both be told that <q>a Boundary Commission is proposed to be formed.</q></p>
<p>The first document included in the file is a letter from <persName ref="prs:crampton_jft">Crampton</persName> to <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Clarendon</persName>, which forwards a copy of <persName ref="prs:marcy_wl">Marcy</persName>’s letter; the second is a letter from <persName ref="prs:marcy_wl">Marcy</persName> to <persName ref="prs:crampton_jft">Crampton</persName>, which asserts that <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan Island</placeName> is considered <q>part of the Territory of the U.S.</q></p>

With reference to my Letter of the <date when="1854-08-05">5<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> instant</date> I am directed by
the <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Earl of Clarendon</persName> to transmit to you for the information of
Secretary <persName ref="prs:grey_g">Sir George Grey</persName> a copy of a Despatch from <persName ref="prs:crampton_jft">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi>
Crampton</persName>, Her Majesty's Minister at Washington, enclosing a copy
of a Letter which he has received from the United States<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Secretary</fw><pb facs="co_305_05/co_305_05_00166v.jpg"/> 
Secretary of State in answer to his Representation respecting
the supposed intention of the United States Authorities in
Oregon to take possession of the property of the Hudson's Bay
Company on the <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">Island of San Juan</placeName> in the <placeName ref="plc:haro_strait">Canal de Arro</placeName>.

apprehended seizure of the Company's property has not been
complained of that I am aware of at all events only as
involving a[n] Invasion of British Territorial Rights.

<persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Gov. Douglas</persName> complained that the Americans seemed about to take
possession of the <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">Island of San Juan</placeName> and not "of the Hudson Bay's
property on <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">the Island</placeName>", with which we have comparatively no
Concern.

I think <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Gov Douglas</persName> &amp; the Company<pb facs="co_305_05/co_305_05_00167rx.jpg"/> should know that a Boundary
Commission is proposed to be formed, and that the <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> last
despatch received since that proposal was under discussion
has been transmitted to the <orgName ref="org:foreign_office">F.O.</orgName>
