<p><persName ref="prs:hammond">Hammond</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName>, on behalf of <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Clarendon</persName> to <persName ref="prs:grey_g">Grey</persName>, to forward a copy of <persName ref="prs:griffith">Griffith</persName>'s note on <q>the importance of settling the Boundary between <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName> and the United States.</q></p>
<p>The minutes observe that, presumably, the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> can do nothing more on the <q>present state of this [boundary] question</q> at present.</p>
<p>The first document included in the file is a letter from <persName ref="prs:griffith">Griffith</persName> to <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Clarendon</persName>, which communicates information received from <persName ref="prs:marcy_wl">Marcy</persName>; the second is a letter from <persName ref="prs:marcy_wl">Marcy</persName> to <persName ref="prs:griffith">Griffith</persName>, which reports that an appropriation amendment needed to establish a boundary commission had been defeated, through want of time, in the US House of Representatives, and that the same amendment will be submitted again to Congress, next session.</p>

by the <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Earl of Clarendon</persName> to transmit to you, to be laid before
<persName ref="prs:grey_g">Secretary Sir George Grey</persName>, a copy of a despatch from Her
Majesty's Charg <unclear>e d'affaires at Washington containing the reply</unclear>
of the United States Secretary of State to a note which <persName ref="prs:griffith">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi>
Griffith</persName> addressed to him urging the importance of settling the
Boundary between <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName> and the United States.
