<p><persName ref="prs:barclay_a">Barclay</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> to advise, after some preamble, that the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> has selected, for <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>, <q><persName ref="prs:cridge">Reverend Edward Cridge</persName> to fill the office vacant by the death of the <persName ref="prs:staines">[Revd] J.R. Staines</persName>.</q></p>
<p>The minutes agree to approve of <persName ref="prs:cridge">Cridge</persName>’s appointment.</p>
<p>The file includes a draft letter from <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName> to <persName ref="prs:barclay_a">Barclay</persName>, which reports <q>no objection</q> to <persName ref="prs:cridge">Cridge</persName>’s appointment.</p>

I am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the
<date when="1854-08-30">30<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Ultimo</date> intimating <persName ref="prs:grey_g">Sir George Grey</persName>'s approbation of the
mode of providing for the support of a clergyman in <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's
Island</placeName> proposed in <persName ref="prs:colvile_a">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Colvile</persName>'s letter of the <date when="1854-07-18">18<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> July</date>, and
to acquaint you that the Governor and Committee of the Hudson's
Bay Company in accordance with the views therein stated, have
selected the <persName ref="prs:cridge">Reverend Edward Cridge</persName> to fill the office vacant by
the death of the <persName ref="prs:staines">Rev<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> J.R. Staines</persName>.
</p>
<p>
<persName ref="prs:cridge">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cridge</persName> is a man of high character and respectable<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">talents</fw><pb facs="co_305_05/co_305_05_00260v.jpg"/> 
talents,
and appears to them to be well qualified for the situation to
which it is proposed to appoint him; they therefore trust that
his appointment will receive the sanction of the Secretary of
State for the Colonies.
</p>
<p>
As every day is now of importance, the Governor and Committee
will feel much obliged by an early reply to this communication.
