<p style="font-style: italic;">This document contains mentions of Indigenous Peoples. <p><persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:grey_g">Sir George Grey</persName> with a copy of a petition for a ship to be sent from London to protect the colony on <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.</p> 
 
<p>The minutes suggest a reply stating that the <name ref="vsl:president" type="vessel">President</name> was sent to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> and agree to send copies to the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName>.</p> 
 
<p>Enclosed within this despatch are two draft replies - one from <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">Labouchere</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> and one from <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> to Secretary of the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> - and the signed petition from the <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> inhabitants.

<p>
I have the honor to enclose herewith copy of a petition, which was
presented to me yesterday, by a deputation of the most respectable
inhabitants of this Colony, praying that I would make a formal
application <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">that</fw><pb facs="co_305_07/co_305_07_00014v.jpg"/>that one of Her Majesty's ships should be sent here, for
their protection.
</p>

<p>
In my Despatch No 3 of the <date when="1856-03-01">1<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> of Instant</date> I communicated my
opinion in respect to the state of the Colony, and the causes which
exist for alarm on the part of the inhabitants, and will only remark in
regard to this petition that its object appears to be just and
reasonable, and therefore I recommend it to the attention of Her
Majesty's Government.

importance of protecting the Settlement, requested the L.C. <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName>
to despatch a Ship of War there, &amp; that "the <name ref="vsl:president" type="vessel">President</name>," frigate having
in consequence been ordered to repair to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">V.C.I.</placeName> <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Labouchere</persName> trusts
that the apprehensions of the Colonists as to an attack upon them by <name type="ip" subtype="group">the
Indians</name> will be removed.
