<p><persName ref="prs:hammond">Hammond</persName> gives <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> a copy of a letter from the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> regarding a correspondence between them and the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> regarding the Reciprocity Treaty of 1854 between Great Britain and the United States.</p>
 
<p>The minutes question whether or not the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> should be privy to correspondence between the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> and the <orgName ref="org:foreign_office">Foreign Office</orgName> concerning the Reciprocity Treaty.</p> 
 
<p>Enclosed is a letter from the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> to Hammond that supports the inclusion of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> in the Reciprocity Treaty.

With reference to the question now before the Secretary of State
for the Colonial Department of extending to the Colony of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName> the provisions of the Treaty between this Country and the United
States of America of the <date when="1854-06-05">5<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of June 1854</date> I am directed by the <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Earl of Clarendon</persName> to transmit to you, to be laid before <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Secretary Labouchere</persName>, a Copy of a Letter from the Hudson's <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Bay</fw><pb facs="co_305_07/co_305_07_00181v.jpg"/>Bay Company
communicating to His Lordship a Correspondence which has taken place
with your Department upon this subject, with further observations
relative thereto.

has crossed ours of <date when="1856-03-13">13 March</date> referring on the question to the H.B.C. so

Clarendon</persName> &amp; the Company about this treaty of which we were unaware. The
circumstance illustrates the inconvenience of the practice, on which I
had already remarked.
