<p><persName ref="prs:shepherd_j">Shepherd</persName> writes to <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">Labouchere</persName> transmitting a letter and the extract of another letter from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> regarding the <q>hostilities now prevailing in American <placeName ref="plc:oregon_territory">Oregon</placeName> between the Indian Tribes and the American Settlers.</q></p>
 
<p> The minutes acknowledge a report from the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> regarding the death of <persName ref="prs:slaughter">Slaughter</persName> and his men. </p>
 
<p>Enclosed is a draft from the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> to <persName ref="prs:hammond">Hammond</persName>; a letter from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> to <persName ref="prs:smith_wg">Smith</persName> reporting his belief that a <q>large body of regular troops on the <placeName ref="plc:columbia_river">Columbia</placeName></q> will not intimidate the First Nations; the extract noting <persName ref="prs:slaughter">Slaughter</persName>’s murder; and three other documents discussing transport of ammunition via the <name ref="vsl:otter" type="vessel">Otter</name> and the <name ref="vsl:traveller" type="vessel">Traveller</name>.

and my reply of the 7<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> on the subject of the hostilities now
prevailing in <placeName ref="plc:oregon_territory">American Oregon</placeName> between <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indian Tribes</name> and the American
Settlers, I have now the honour to transmit Copy of a Letter received
from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> under date <date when="1856-12-11">11<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> December</date>, and Extract of Letter
from the same gentleman dated <date when="1856-12-19">December 19<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi></date>, conveying further
information upon that matter.

This must have occurred between the 13 &amp; 19<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Dec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi>. Communicate this

night. With such a force, <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indians</name> would soon be compelled to submit,
or be entirely destroyed."
