<persName ref="prs:smith_wg">Smith</persName> forwards to Labouchere a letter from <q>the Deputy Governor of this Company to the Earl of <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Clarendon</persName>.</q></p>
 
<p>The minutes express the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName>’s hesitation to <q>put by</q> the letter and they opt to await a reply containing more information.</p>
 
<p>The file contains two letters, one from <persName ref="prs:griffin">Griffin</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>, the other from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> to <persName ref="prs:stevens_ii">Stevens</persName>, both regarding an attack on the British settlement by a party of Americans on <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan Island</placeName>.
