<p><persName ref="prs:shepherd">Shepherd</persName> forwards a report from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> to the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> confirming the completion of an expedition to the <placeName ref="plc:cowichan_region">Cowichan district</placeName> in order to arrest a man accused of murder. He announces that the expedition <q>accomplish[ed] their object without any casualty.</q></p>

<p>The minutes <q>Put by</q> as the CO is already <q>in possession of this intelligence.</q></p>

<p>Enclosed is an extract of the letter from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> to the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName> reporting the success of the expedition.</p>

With reference to my letter of the <date when="1856-11-08">8<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Instant</date>, on the subject
of an attempt at murder by <name type="ip" subtype="individual">an Indian in <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName></name>, and the
steps adopted by <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName>, in conjunction with <persName ref="prs:bruce_hw">Admiral Bruce</persName>, to
punish the culprit, I have now the honor to enclose for your information
an Extract of a letter from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName>, dated <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName>, <date when="1856-09-06">6<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> September 1856</date>, by which it appears that the expedition
had returned, after accomplishing their object without any casualty.
