Shepherd forwards a report from Douglas to the Colonial Office confirming the completion of an expedition to the Cowichan district in order to arrest a man accused of murder. He announces that the expedition accomplish[ed] their object without any casualty.

Enclosed is an extract of the letter from Douglas to the HBC reporting the success of the expedition.

With reference to my letter of the 8th Instant, on the subject of an attempt at murder by an Indian in Vancouver's Island, and the steps adopted by Governor Douglas, in conjunction with Admiral Bruce, to punish the culprit, I have now the honor to enclose for your information an Extract of a letter from Governor Douglas, dated Victoria, Vancouvers Island, 6th September 1856, by which it appears that the expedition had returned, after accomplishing their object without any casualty.
