In consequence of my noticing the appointment of <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> David Cameron</persName> to the office of Chief Justice of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName>, I have
addressed a letter to the Parties of that Settlement who brought that
Gentleman's name under your notice.

<date when="1856-07-28">28 July/54</date> that An enquiry into the fitness of <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cameron</persName> for the
Judicial office<pb facs="co_305_07/co_305_07_00424r.jpg"/> was not neglected by this office—that the enquiry was
ans<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> by the H.B.C<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> on the <date when="1854-08-03">3<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi> Aug<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi>/54</date>—that the Governor
was also written to on the same point on the 20<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of the same
month—that he ans<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> the S. of States <choice><abbr>desp<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">h</hi></abbr><expan>despatch</expan></choice> on the 11
Dec<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi>/54—whose <choice><abbr>desp<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">h</hi></abbr><expan>despatch</expan></choice>, though not answered, I assume has been
considered satisfactory inasmuch as <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cameron</persName> has been confirmed in
the Office of Chief Justice by <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Labouchere</persName>s <choice><abbr>desp<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">h</hi></abbr><expan>despatch</expan></choice> of the <date when="1856-04-26">26
April last</date>.
