In consequence of my noticing the appointment of Mr David Cameron to the office of Chief Justice of Vancouvers Island, I have addressed a letter to the Parties of that Settlement who brought that Gentleman's name under your notice.

A copy of that letter I take leave to enclose to you; shd?.

Mr Merivale The Letters referred to in the enclosure are in circulation. With whom resting I am unable to say. I annex the Registry account of them, for the purpose of identification.

You will observe from our Letter to Mr Colville [Colvile] of the 28 July/54 that An enquiry into the fitness of Mr Cameron for the Judicial office was not neglected by this office—that the enquiry was ansd by the H.B.Co on the 3rd Augt/54—that the Governor was also written to on the same point on the 20th of the same month—that he ansd the S. of States desphdespatch on the 11 Decr/54—whose desphdespatch, though not answered, I assume has been considered satisfactory inasmuch as Mr Cameron has been confirmed in the Office of Chief Justice by Mr Laboucheres desphdespatch of the 26 April last.
