I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch[es] No. 24 of the
<date when="1856-11-08">8<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of November</date> and No. 32 of the <date when="1856-12-13">13 December last</date> reporting the
measures which you had taken for aiding the Authorites of the United
states in repelling the hostile attacks of <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indian Tribes</name>
on the <placeName ref="plc:oregon_territory">American Oregon</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
Your proceedings on this occasion appear to have been judicious and
I am<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">gratified</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_01/rg7_g8c_01_00175r.jpg"/> gratified to learn that they were duly appreciated by the
Authorites and the Inhabitants of the American Settlements.
