<p style="font-style: italic;">This document contains mentions of Indigenous Peoples. The authors of these documents often perpetuate a negative perspective of Indigenous Peoples and it is important to look critically at these mentions. <p><persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">Labouchere</persName> approves of <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>’s actions in <q>the capture and execution of an Indian found guilty of attempting the life of a British Settler in the <placeName ref="plc:cowichan_region">Cowegin Country</placeName>.</q> He cautions, however, that the <q>peculiar and aggravated circumstances</q> warranted this action, but that the <q>extreme measure of sending an Armed Force against the Indian Tribes</q> should only be resorted to carefully and when urgency demands it.</p>

I have to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatches N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">os</hi> 20 and
21 of the <date when="1856-08-22">22<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> of August</date> and the <date when="1856-09-06">6<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of September last</date>, reporting
the capture and execution of <name type="ip" subtype="individual">an Indian found guilty of attempting the
life of a British Settler</name> in the <placeName ref="plc:cowichan_region">Cowegin<pb facs="rg7_g8c_01/rg7_g8c_01_00274v.jpg"/> Country</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
In the present instance I have no hesitation in approving your
proceedings, which the peculiar and aggravated circumstances of the case
appear to have justified, but I would remind you that the extreme
measure of sending an Armed Force against <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indian Tribes</name> must be
resorted to with great caution, and only in a case which urgently
demands the adoption of such a course.

With reference to<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">what</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_01/rg7_g8c_01_00275r.jpg"/> what you say of the conduct of <persName ref="prs:connolly">Commander Connolly</persName>,
