<p><persName ref="prs:hammond">Hammond</persName> forwards to the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> <q>copies of a Despatch and of its inclosures from Her Majesty’s Minister at <placeName ref="plc:washington_city">Washington</placeName> relative to the repayment of a sum of money advanced by the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">VanCouvers Island</placeName> [sic] to the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:washington_territory">Washington</placeName> for the prosecution of hostilities against the Indians.</q> </p>

<p>The minutes copy to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> for his information.</p>

<p>Enclosed are four documents concerning the repayment of an <date when="1856-04">April 1856</date> loan <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> issued <persName ref="prs:stevens_ii">Governor Stevens</persName> for the military defense of <placeName ref="plc:washington_territory">Washington State</placeName>.</p>

directed by the <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Earl of Clarendon</persName> to transmit to you, to be laid before
<persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Secretary Labouchere</persName>, copies of a Despatch and of its inclosures
from Her Majesty's Minister at Washington relative to the repayment of a
sum of money advanced by the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">VanCouvers Island</placeName> to the
Governor of Washington for<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_305_08/co_305_08_00295v.jpg"/> 
the prosecution of hostilities against <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indians</name>.
