I am directed by the Governor and Committee of the Hudson's Bay
Company to transmit, for the information of <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Secretary Labouchere</persName>,
the accompanying Extract from a letter recently received from the
Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName>, communicating the fact of an attack
having been made by some <name type="ip" subtype="group">Northern (British) Indians</name> on the house of
<persName ref="prs:ebey_in">Colonel Ebey</persName> (late United States Collector of Customs) on <placeName ref="plc:whidbey_island">Whidby's
Island</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:washington_territory">Washington Territory</placeName>, which resulted in the murder of that
gentleman.
</p>
<p>
In communicating the above circumstance the Governor and Committee
desire me to express their regret that this unfortunate occurrence<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">should</fw><pb facs="co_305_08/co_305_08_00339v.jpg"/>
should have taken place, as it appears likely to disturb the peace which
has hitherto prevailed on the Northern side of the Boundary line.

<p>
This is an unfortunate occurrence but it is not in the power of the
British Authorities, few as they are in this Settlement, to control <name type="ip" subtype="group">the
Indians living within their territories</name>, any more than the Authorities
of the U. States can control <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indians who reside on their lands</name>.
Hitherto <name type="ip" subtype="group">the British Indians</name> have<pb facs="co_305_08/co_305_08_00340r.jpg"/> 
been well behaved. But there always
exist grounds of apprehension on account of these <name type="ip" subtype="group">savages</name>, against whom
we have no military, or other force save a few constables to oppose,
when our people are attacked.

carried off his head as a trophy. His wife and family fortunately
escaped . . . by concealing themselves in the neighbouring forest. This
affair will lead to something serious."
