Smith writes on behalf of the HBC to inform the Colonial Office that they will transport a Bag of Books to Douglas but that it is not likely that a vessel will sail to Vancouver Island before the summer of 1858.

The minutes suggest enquiring with the Admiralty if they have an earlier vessel going to Vancouver Island and note the response that there is No vessel going.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 7th instant, requesting that a Bag of Books for the Governor of Vancouver's Island sent therewith, may be forwarded to its destination by the first vessel which the Hudson's Bay Company may despatch to that Island.

The Governor and Committee direct me to inform you that they will be happy to take charge of the bag, but they think it necessary to state that it is not likely that the Company will despatch any vessel to Vancouver's Island before the summer of 1858.
