<p>The minutes acknowledge receipt and the fact that <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> had already provided them with said enclosures.</p>

<p>Enclosed is three documents concerning the murder of <persName ref="prs:ebey_in">Ebey</persName>.</p>

I have the honour to Enclose for your information copy of a
correspondence between <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> and the Acting Governor of
<placeName ref="plc:washington_territory">Washington Territory</placeName> United States on the subject of the murder of <persName ref="prs:ebey_in">Colonel Ebey</persName> by some <name type="ip" subtype="group">Northern Indians</name>.
</p>
<p>
There appears to be some doubt whether this murder was committed by
<name type="ip" subtype="group">Indians inhabiting Her Majesty's Territories</name>, or those belonging to
Russia, [Marginal note: The <choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> stated this. <persName ref="prs:jadis_v">VJ</persName>] but I may remark
that a copy of <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Elliot</persName>s letter of the <date when="1857-11-09">9<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> November</date> was
immediately forwarded to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Douglas</persName>, and the Governor &amp; Committee
then expressed their deep regret at this unfortunate occurrence, and<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">directed</fw><pb facs="co_305_08/co_305_08_00348v.jpg"/>
directed <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Douglas</persName>'s particular attention to the wish of Her Majesty's Government that he should use every effort to discover and punish the offenders.

but that he would try to "induce them to suspend their visits to the
white settlements and to remain quietly in their own country."
