<p><persName ref="prs:hawes_b">Hawes</persName> informs the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> that a party of Royal Engineers are to be dispatched to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> in order to survey the boundary between the British Territory and the United States. He hopes that <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> will be notified to expect their arrival and make any <q>arrangements as he may consider necessary.</q></p>

<p>The minutes annex <persName ref="prs:hawes_b">Hawes</persName>’ despatch for the following morning’s mail to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.</p>

<p>Enclosed is a draft from <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">Labouchere</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>, informing him of the boundary survey and a letter from <persName ref="prs:hawes_b">Hawes</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> advising him to expect the arrival of a party of not less than seven officers and thirty non-commissioned men of the Boundary Commission, and requesting that he prepare temporary accommodation for them and assist them in every possible way.</p>

<persName ref="prs:panmure">Lord Panmure</persName> desires me to acquaint you, that, in compliance with
the request of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, arrangements
are being made for despatching a party, under the orders of an officer
of Royal Engineers, to North America to be employed in laying out the
boundary between the territories of Great Britain and the United States.

This party will leave England on the <date when="1856-02-01">1<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> February</date> next and will rendezvous at <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> and, as it is most important that the
Governor of that Island should be advised by the earliest opportunity of
the expected arrival of this party in order that he may make such
arrangements as he may consider necessary, <persName ref="prs:panmure">Lord Panmure</persName> has caused a
letter to be addressed to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName>, of which I am to enclose a
copy for<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_305_08/co_305_08_00359r.jpg"/>
the information of <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Secretary Labouchere</persName>.

Evening, &amp; the following one on the <date when="1856-01-16">16 of Janry</date>. The War Dept. do not
state the name of the Engineer Officer who is to act as Chief
Commiss<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> nor are we aware of the nature of the Instructions he has
received. I annex the Despatch addressed to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j"><choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> Douglas</persName> in the case
of the <hi style="text-decoration: underline;">Water Survey</hi> between <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Van Couver's Isld</placeName>: &amp; the Main land.

Though marked "Immediate" this letter was not placed in my hands as<lb/>
such, as I have repeatedly requested might be done, in all such cases,
and consequently I did not see it until today. This is however
immaterial as the letter forming the enclosure has gone. Write by mail
of 15<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> in the same sense as on the former occasion.
