<p><persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> writes concerning <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">Cameron</persName>’s salary. Aware that the decision has been handed over to the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>, <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> argues that as <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">Cameron</persName> <q>received his appointment from Her Majesty’s Government</q> he should have <q>the support</q> of the government as opposed to the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>.</p>

<p>The minutes state the <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>’s request <q>seems reasonable in substance</q> but can’t come to decision without knowing the intentions of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>.</p>

<p>Enclosed is a draft reply from <persName ref="prs:stanley">Stanley</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> informing him that the local legislature should find means of defraying <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">Cameron</persName>’s salary.</p>

1. I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch
No 14 of the <date when="1858-11-06">6<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of November last</date> in reply to my letter of the
28<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of July, in which I requested your instructions as to the
amount and payment of the Salary to be assigned to <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cameron</persName>
the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of<placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island"><fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Vancouver's</fw><pb facs="co_305_09/co_305_09_00004v.jpg"/> 
Vancouver's Island</placeName>,
and I observe that you have referred the question to the
<orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName>, with whom it appears the decision rests.
</p>
<p>
2. As <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cameron</persName> received his appointment from Her Majesty's
Government, and as it is obviously conducive to the best
interests of the Colony, and to his efficiency as Judge, that he
should be placed in a perfectly respectable and independent
position as to the emoluments of his office, may I request the
support of Her Majesty's Government, in favor of any measures,
having that object in view, which may be hereafter proposed by
the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName>.

The request seems reasonable in substance, but I do not see how
Government can pledge themselves beforehand to any measure
(without knowing what) which the H.B.C. may adopt in favour
of <persName ref="prs:cameron_d">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Cameron</persName>. Perhaps this desp. had better be communicated to
the Company &amp; they may be asked whether it refers to any project
entertained by them (see our draft of <date when="1858-11-06">6 Nov</date>).
