<p>Enclosed is a draft from the CO to the FO forwarding a copy of this despatch.</p>

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Despatch No
5 of the <date when="1858-03-15">15<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> March last</date>, transmitting copy of a Despatch from
Her Majesty's Minister at <placeName ref="plc:washington_city">Washington</placeName>, reporting what had passed
between him and the United States Secretary of State, relative
to the payment of the money, which I advanced to the Governor of
<placeName ref="plc:washington_territory">Washington<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Territory</fw><pb facs="co_305_09/co_305_09_00084v.jpg"/> 
Territory</placeName>, at a time of great public danger and
distress, for the purpose of defending the homes and families of
helpless settlers, against the murderous attacks of <name type="ip" subtype="group">the Indian
Tribes</name>; a course dictated by humanity, and which proved highly
satisfactory to Her Majesty's Government.
</p>
<p>
I am sure that I highly appreciate your Kindness in urging
through <persName ref="prs:napier">Lord Napier</persName> the immediate repayment of that loan by the
United States Government.
</p>
<p>
I observe the assurance given by <persName ref="prs:cass_l">General Cass</persName>,
to <persName ref="prs:napier">Lord Napier</persName> that measures, should be taken, without delay for
the satisfaction of Her Majesty's Government, in that matter;
but in the event of further<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">procrastination</fw><pb facs="co_305_09/co_305_09_00085r.jpg"/> procrastination on the part of the
United States Government, in the payment of the loan, I trust
that your Lordship will have the goodness to press the subject
upon the attention of that Government.
