<p><persName ref="prs:corry_htl">Corry</persName> informs the CO that orders will be sent to <persName ref="prs:baynes_rl">Admiral Baynes</persName> to have some member of the Pacific fleet to proceed to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> <q>for the purpose of ascertaining whether the Naval Force already stationed there is sufficient for the support of the Civil Authority and the protection of British Interests.</q></p>

<p>The minutes evaluate whether the marines will travel deep into the gold region, or if a <q>demonstration</q> of strength may be better to prevent the <q>extreme probability</q> of desertion.</p>

<p>Enclosed is a confidential draft from <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Lytton</persName> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> urging him to use his judgement to avoid military conflict.</p>

I have received and laid before my Lords Commissioners of the
<orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> your Letter of the <date when="1858-06-26">26<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Ins<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi></date> with its enclosure from
the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>, relative to a Steam Vessel
being stationed for the present at that Island to protect
British Interests, in consequence of the number of persons
resorting to the recently discovered Gold Fields in Her
Majesty's Dominions in North Western America in the
neighbourhood of <placeName ref="plc:fraser_river">Frazer's River</placeName>.

My Lords desire me to state for the information of Secretary <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Sir E. Bulwer Lytton</persName> that orders will be sent to <persName ref="prs:baynes_rl">Rear Admiral Baynes</persName>
the Commander in Chief of Her Majesty's Ships on the Pacific
Station either himself to proceed to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>, or to
select some Senior Officer to send thither, for the purpose of
ascertaining whether the Naval Force already stationed there is
sufficient for the support of the Civil Authority and the
protection of British Interests—and should the Force not be
considered sufficient the Rear Admiral will be instructed to
send such<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">in</fw><pb facs="co_305_09/co_305_09_00292r.jpg"/> 
in addition as he may deem to be necessary.

obvious that the commanding officers will avoid doing this if
they possibly can, on account of the
<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">extreme</hi>
probability of such
marines or seamen deserting. The longer it can be confined to a
demonstration the better, &amp; I should think it best to leave the
matter where it stands?
