<p><persName ref="prs:hammond">Hammond</persName> forwards a report from <persName ref="prs:prevost_jc">Prevost</persName> on the <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan</placeName> boundary commision. The commissioners representing each side <q>failed to come to an agreement.</q></p>

<p>In the minutes, the CO suggest either a survey conducted by a neutral power, arbitration, or convincing American officials to agree to <persName ref="prs:prevost_jc">Prevost</persName>’s proposed <q>compromise line.</q> They settle on arbitration and pass on their verdict to the <orgName ref="org:foreign_office">Foreign Office</orgName>.</p>

<p>Enclosed is a draft from <persName ref="prs:merivale_h">Merivale</persName> to <persName ref="prs:hammond">Hammond</persName> suggesting arbitration.</p>

I am directed by the <persName ref="prs:clarendon">Earl of Clarendon</persName> to transmit to you
herewith, to be laid before <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Secretary Labouchere</persName>, a Despatch
in original from <persName ref="prs:prevost_jc">Captain Prevost</persName> reporting the result of his
communications with the American Commissioner on the subject of
the Boundary Line between the Continent and <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">VanCouver's Island</placeName>.
<persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Labouchere</persName> will see that the Commissioners have failed to
come to an agreement, and that it remains for the Government of
Her Majesty and that of the United States to rendezvous to come
to some direct understanding<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">between</fw><pb facs="co_305_09/co_305_09_00370v.jpg"/> between themselves on the subject.
</p>
<p><persName ref="prs:clarendon">Lord Clarendon</persName> would be glad to be made acquainted with <persName ref="prs:labouchere_h">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Labouchere</persName>'s opinion on <persName ref="prs:prevost_jc">Captain Prevost</persName>'s Report and on the
course to be pursued in the present state of the matter, and His
Lordship will then Communicate with the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Board of Admiralty</orgName> on
the subject.
</p>
