Enclosed are extracts from two Douglas despatches outlining his desire to keep out the great numbers of American miners and reports from an experienced miner as to the probable richness of the gold fields.

Extract, Douglas to W.G. Smith, Hudson's Bay Company, 22 March 1858, expressing his desire to keep out the great numbers of Americans who were flocking into the gold country.
He probably refers to strangers who in defiance of the Proclamation which he has issued come in & dig without a license. ABd
