<p><persName ref="prs:shepherd">Shepherd</persName> forwards letters from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> respecting the <q>expected migration of the Mormon into Her Majesty’s possession on the North West Coast of America.</q></p>

<p>The minutes note that the CO’s <q>advices</q> to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> on this subject are dated <date when="1858-04-06">6 April 1858</date>.</p>

<p>Enclosed is a draft from the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> to <persName ref="prs:shepherd">Shepherd</persName> acknowledging receipt of his letter and enclosure; and a report from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> to <persName ref="prs:smith_wg">Smith</persName> reporting that he had no intimation of the approach of the Mormons.</p>

With reference to the communications which have taken place from
time to time with the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> on the subject of an
expected migration of the Mormons into Her Majesty's possessions
on the North West Coast of America, I have now the honor to
enclose for your information a Copy of a letter just received by
the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay Company</orgName> from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> dated <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>,
<placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName>, <date when="1858-03-31">31<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> March last</date>, which, I trust, will be
satisfactory.
