Shepherd forwards letters from Douglas respecting the expected migration of the Mormon into Her Majesty’s possession on the North West Coast of America.

The minutes note that the CO’s advices to Douglas on this subject are dated 6 April 1858.

Enclosed is a draft from the Colonial Office to Shepherd acknowledging receipt of his letter and enclosure; and a report from Douglas to Smith reporting that he had no intimation of the approach of the Mormons.

With reference to the communications which have taken place from time to time with the Colonial Office on the subject of an expected migration of the Mormons into Her Majesty's possessions on the North West Coast of America, I have now the honor to enclose for your information a Copy of a letter just received by the Hudson's Bay Company from Governor Douglas dated Victoria, Vancouvers Island, 31st March last, which, I trust, will be satisfactory.
