He promises requested <q>details as to the nature and character of the possessions thus claimed</q> as soon as he receives reports from local officers.</p>

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of the <persName ref="prs:carnarvon">Earl of Carnarvon</persName>'s letter of the <date when="1858-11-10">10<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Instant</date><!-- HES dated as Nov beacuse he must have drafted the letter in Nov --> on the subject of the
property which is now and has been for many years past in the
possession of this Company in the vicinity of their
Establishments in various parts of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName> and
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>; and also of the Copy of the Despatch on the
same subject and of equal date addressed by you to <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName>. On the part of myself and my Colleagues in the
direction I beg to offer you our best thanks for this obliging
communication.<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Lord</fw><pb facs="co_305_09/co_305_09_00529v.jpg"/> 
<persName ref="prs:carnarvon">Lord Carnarvon</persName> mentions that you would be glad
to be put in possession of any further details as to the nature
and character of the possessions thus claimed.
</p>
<p>
At present we have no such information, but I shall lose no time
in referring the matter to the officers in charge of the
Stations, and as soon as I receive their reports I shall have
the honour of again communicating with you upon the subject.
