<p><persName ref="prs:howe_ab">Howe</persName> asks if his son could be appointed as <q>Colonial Chaplain</q> for either the colony at <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName> or the Naval depot in <placeName ref="plc:esquimalt">Esquimalt</placeName>.</p>

<p>The minutes answer that <persName ref="prs:stanley">Lord Stanley</persName> can give no answer at this point as the future of the government of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> is still the responsibility of the <orgName ref="org:hbc">HBC</orgName>.</p>

<p>Enclosed is a draft from the CO to <persName ref="prs:howe_ab">Howe</persName> stating that they could not furnish the information requested.</p>

It has been stated in the Papers that the Government intend
to colonize <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> and to establish a Naval Depôt
there. May I be permitted to ask if that be intended? as my
Son, who is Chaplain of the Dockyard at Malta has requested
me to ask, intending<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">to</fw><pb facs="co_305_09/co_305_09_00600v.jpg"/> 
to apply either to the Dockyard should one
be established or to be appointed as Colonial Chaplain, for
either of which he is well fitted.
