<p><persName ref="prs:read_w">William Read</persName> responds to the alleged intention of the CO to take an <q>Ethnological Survey</q> of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>. He enquires whether appointments are made through them or through the <orgName ref="org:rgs">Royal Geographical Society</orgName>.</p>

<p>The minutes discuss whether any such <q>survey</q> or <q>scientific expedition</q> has been proposed and if not should inform <persName ref="prs:read_w">Read</persName> that <q>he is mistaken.</q></p>

<p>Enclosed is a draft reply from the CO to <persName ref="prs:read_w">Read</persName> stating that the government had no plans to undertake an ethnological survey of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.</p>

It having been announced as the intention of your Lordships
predecessor, to cause an Ethnological Survey of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers
Island</placeName> to be made, I am desirous of ascertaining whether or not
your Lordship has determined upon proceeding with the same; as
in the event of the<pb facs="co_305_09/co_305_09_00658v.jpg"/> 
appointments not being already made I purpose
submitting to your Lordship my claims for an Engagement thereon.
</p>
<p>
I am not aware whether the appointments will be made direct from
your Lordship, or mediately through the instrumentality of the
<orgName ref="org:rgs">Royal Geographical Society</orgName>, and I shall feel greatly obliged by
receiving such information as will enable me to forward my
application through the proper Channel.
