I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to transmit to you,
for the information of <persName ref="prs:lytton_egeb">Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton</persName>, the enclosed copy of
a letter from <persName ref="prs:hawkins_js">Lieutenant Colonel Hawkins</persName>, Her Majesty's Commissioner
for defining our North Western Boundary in North America, in which he
suggests that the Land, Buildings &amp;c, purchased in <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName>
for the use of the Surveying Party under his command, should
eventually <pb facs="co_305_13/co_305_13_00041v.jpg"/>be transferred to the Colonial Government at a valuation,
instead of being disposed of to private parties.

As the amount of land possessed by the <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Admiralty</orgName> at <placeName ref="plc:esquimalt">Esquimalt</placeName> is, as
I have heard, less than they really require, it may be a
consideration whether this s<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> not be communicated to them in the
first instance to give them the option of becoming possessed of the
area in question s<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> they think it desirable. But this is a point
<choice><abbr>w<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">h</hi></abbr><expan>which</expan></choice> will be best decided on by our Successors.
