<p><persName ref="prs:allen_bg">Allen</persName> asks the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> to appoint <persName ref="prs:smith_wb">William Burlington Smith</persName> to a position in government on <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>, especially Collector of Customs or Post Master. <persName ref="prs:allen_bg">Allen</persName> admits he knows nothing about <persName ref="prs:smith_wb">Smith</persName>, but he feels obligated to contact the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> on <persName ref="prs:smith_wb">Smith</persName>’s behalf to preserve his relationships in the area.</p>

<p>The minutes point out that there is already a Collector of Customs in place and there is no position of Post Master in <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>. </p>

<p>Enclosed is a draft from <persName ref="prs:carnarvon">Carnarvon</persName> to <persName ref="prs:allen_bg">Allen</persName> stating the government was not able to offer <persName ref="prs:smith_wb">Smith</persName> any appointment; and a memorial recommending <persName ref="prs:smith_wb">Smith</persName> for the position of postmaster or collector of customs.</p>

Herewith I beg to enclose you a document in the shape of a memorial
or application on behalf of a <persName ref="prs:smith_wb">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> William Burlington Smith</persName> who is
anxious it seems to get some appointment under Government in
<placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's <pb facs="co_305_13/co_305_13_00220v.jpg"/>Island</placeName>. I know nothing of <persName ref="prs:smith_wb">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Smith</persName>, but I can vouch for
the respectability of all the parties who have signed the document
which is a curious one.

Post Master.
