Enclosed is Carnarvon to Hicks advising the memorial had been received, but that it was not possible to offer any situation to Smith and there was no need for a Post Master in Vancouver Island.

I beg respectfully to ask the favour of your informing me if you have received a memorial in favour of Mr William Burington [Burlington] Smith. Mr T. Allen of Burnham was intrusted with that Document to foreward to you through one of our County Members but that Gentleman informed me he sent it direct to you. It was to request the favour of your kind assistance to procure for him the Situation of Collector of Customs or Post Master at Victoria Vancouvers Island, North America. The Memorial was signed by eight very respectable Gentlemen well known to Wm Miles Esqe M.P. I am Personaly aquainted with Mr Smith and can recommend him to you as a clever, interesting Talented Man, who is capable of rendering valuable assistance to the Government of this Country, in assisting the management of the Colony of Vancouvers Island, he is now a resident in Government Street, Victoria Vancouvers Island North America.

If your Honour will favour me with a Line on the subject you will much Oblige
