herewith for the information of Her Majesty's Secretary of State for

There are, as you are aware, various reports on this subject from
Governor &amp; Admiral. The present report is satisfactory inasmuch as
it discourages the idea of danger to the Settlement. I cannot but
think that the Governor has committed an error in allowing <name type="ip" subtype="group">the
Indians</name> to approach so near the <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Town of Victoria</placeName>. He has probably
permitted them to do so on acc<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">t</hi> of the <pb facs="co_305_15/co_305_15_00080r.jpg"/>advantage of selling to them
English commodities. But this is a <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay C<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi></orgName> view which is
purely directed to matters of profit, and not one by which the
Governor should be influenced only.
