before His Grace The <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName>, a Copy of a note from <persName ref="prs:cass_l">General
Cass</persName> to <persName ref="prs:dallas_gm">Mr Dallas</persName> dated the <date when="1860-02-04">4<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> Ultimo</date>, in reply to the Despatch
from <persName ref="prs:russell_j">Lord John Russell</persName> respecting the question of <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan</placeName>, of which
a copy was transmitted to you in my letter of the <date when="1859-12-30">30<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of December</date>

See 859. With all respect for <persName ref="prs:cass_l">Gen. Cass</persName>, the first part of his
despatch seems "logomachy" only. Of course what <persName ref="prs:russell_j">L<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> JR</persName> meant was,
not that we would never cede <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">S. Juan</placeName> if the Am<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">n</hi>
<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">right</hi> to it was established, but that we would never make the
cession of <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan</placeName> any part of a
<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">compromise</hi>. <pb facs="co_305_15/co_305_15_00138r.jpg"/>All that we seem to have to do in the matter is to
point out to the <orgName ref="org:foreign_office">For. Office</orgName> that this was the sense in which
<hi style="text-decoration: underline;">we</hi> understood his Lordship, and that by his Lordship's
declaration, so understood, we think the British Government ought to
abide?
</ab>
<p>
The observation about the comparatively minor importance of <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan</placeName>
in consequence of the deep water of the channel is not without its
weight, but it comes from the enemy.
