I am directed by <persName ref="prs:russell_j">Lord John Russell</persName> to acknowledge the receipt of your
Letter of the <date when="1860-05-31">31<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> Ultimo</date> and it's Inclosures respecting the joint
Military Occupation of the <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">Island of San Juan</placeName>; and I am to request
that you will state to <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">the</fw><pb facs="co_305_15/co_305_15_00186v.jpg"/>the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName> that <persName ref="prs:russell_j">Lord John Russell</persName>
approves of <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName>' communication to <persName ref="prs:baynes_rl">Rear Admiral Baynes</persName>
upon this subject.

When the first of the Governor's two despatches arrived, the Foreign
Office demurred to approving of his course until we should hear
further, and this is doubtless the reason why in their present letter
they intimate approval. It is another form of saying that they would
no longer object to express approval if desired. But it was decided
by the Duke on 4818 merely to acknowledge the Governor's two
despatches and this <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">has</fw><pb facs="co_305_15/co_305_15_00187r.jpg"/>has been done accordingly. We have had
subsequent reason not to be so well pleased with <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName>'s correspondence with the Admiral. I think therefore that the present
letter may be put by.
