I am directed by <persName ref="prs:russell_j">Lord John Russell</persName> to transmit to you, for the
information of Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies, a
Copy of a Despatch from Her Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at
Washington, inclosing copies of his communications with <persName ref="prs:trescot">Mr Trescot</persName> on
the subject of <persName ref="prs:russell_j">Lord John Russell</persName>'s Despatch <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">to</fw><pb facs="co_305_15/co_305_15_00241v.jpg"/>to <persName ref="prs:lyons">Lord Lyons</persName> No 171 of
the <date when="1860-07-20">20<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> of July last</date>, proposing the substitution of Military for
civil Jurisdiction in <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan</placeName>, a Copy of which Despatch was inclosed
in <persName ref="prs:wodehouse">Lord Wodehouse</persName>'s letter of the <date when="1860-07-23">23<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi></date> of that month.
