<p>
With reference to your letter of the <date when="1860-08-11">11 Inst</date> relative to Bills drawn
on account of the cost of construction of two Lighthouses in
<placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName>, I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her
Majestys Treasury to transmit herewith copy of a letter from the
<orgName ref="org:board_trade">Board of Trade</orgName>—dated <date when="1860-08-08">8 Inst</date>—on this subject together with copy of
Their Lordships reply, and I am to request that you will move the
Secretary of State to instruct the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> to
limit if possible the expenditure for the service within the amount
intimated in his Despatch <fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">No</fw><pb facs="co_305_15/co_305_15_00573v.jpg"/>No 31 of <date when="1860-06-18">18 June</date>.
</p>
<p>
Their Lordships wish to be favored with the opinion of the Secretary
of State whether the further sum required for the service beyond the
vote of £7000 should be inserted in the Estimate for Lighthouses to
be submitted to Parliament for the year 1861-2 on the understanding,
as before, that one half will be hereafter repaid from Colonial
Funds.

requested, in regard to limiting the expenditure within the Sum
specified. As the Governor is fully aware that the two Colonies of
<placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">VanCouver's Island</placeName> &amp; <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">B. Columbia</placeName> are to bear half the cost conjointly
the answer to the last paragraph must I presume be in the
affirmative?
