<persName ref="prs:newcastle">Newcastle</persName> acknowledges <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>'s despatches no. 48, dated <date when="1860-11-14">14 November 1860</date>,
and no. 17, dated <date when="1861-02-17">17 February 1861</date> regarding pay for the Royal Marines on <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan Island</placeName>
and instructs him to <q>furnish particulars of the services for which you have hitherto drawn Bills on the Paymaster General, and for the future to specify the service
upon the Bills themselves, in order that the amounts of your drafts may be provided for from the proper sources.</q>

I have the honor to transmit to you herewith the copy of a letter
from <orgName ref="org:treasury">the Treasury</orgName>, relative to the Bills which you reported in your
despatch No. 48 of the <date when="1861-11-14">14th of November</date>, and No. 17 of the <date when="1861-02-19">19th of February</date> last that you had drawn on Her Majesty's Paymaster General for the extra pay of the detachment of Royal Marines<!--<pb facs="co_410_01/co_410_01_00160r.jpg"/>--><fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">at</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_02/rg7_g8c_02_00284v.jpg"/> at present serving in
<placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan</placeName>.
</p>
<p>
The expenditure on account of these Marines while serving in
<placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName> and while stationed in <placeName ref="plc:san_juan_island">San Juan</placeName> is chargeable to separate accounts in this Country, and I have to instruct you in
compliance with the request of the <orgName ref="org:treasury">Lords Commissoners of the Treasury</orgName>
to furnish particulars of the services for which you have hitherto
drawn Bills on the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Paymaster</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_02/rg7_g8c_02_00285r.jpg"/> Paymaster General, and for the future to specify the
service upon the Bills themselves, in order that the amounts of your
drafts may be provided for from the proper sources.
