I transmit to you copies of correspondence between the War Office and this Department relative to the erection of Barracks in Vancouver Island, and I have to request that you will furnish me with a report upon the question of a site for these Buildings, in the event of Troops being ultimatelystationed stationed there.

Rogers, War Office, to Under-Secretary of State, Colonial Office, 28 June 1861 stating that if the barracks are built within the Hudson's Bay Company's reserve, the land will have to be purchased from from the company, but "if otherwise, ungranted or unsold land will probably be available for the purpose."
