decided to present the colony of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> with two surplus <q>68 Pd Guns</q> from
HMS <name ref="vsl:bacchante" type="vessel">Bacchante</name> and HMS <name ref="vsl:topaze" type="vessel">Topaze</name> to be used <q>for the defence
of <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName> or <placeName ref="plc:esquimalt">Esquimalt</placeName>,</q> neither of which was protected
by guns as powerful at the time.

I am commanded by my <orgName ref="org:admiralty">Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty</orgName> to acquaint
you, for the information of His Grace the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName>, that
arrangements have been made by the Admiral in the Pacific for landing
two 68 P<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi> Guns at <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver</placeName>, for the defence of <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName> or <placeName ref="plc:esquimalt">Esquimalt</placeName>, as it appears there are no Guns there at present.
</p>
<p>
These two Guns will be furnished by H.M.S. "<name ref="vsl:bacchante" type="vessel">Bacchante</name>" and "<name ref="vsl:topaze" type="vessel">Topaze</name>",
which are about to be supplied with Armstrong<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Guns</fw><pb facs="co_305_19/co_305_19_00334v.jpg"/> Guns; and their present
heavy Guns can therefore be appropriated to the Service of the Colony.
</p>
