<persName ref="prs:murdoch_twc">Murdoch</persName> forwards <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName> a letter from <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>
in which <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName> <q>suggests that some arrangement should be come to with the
<orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay C<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi></orgName> to allow of the sale of the Land claimed
by them on the ground of occupation previous to <date when="1849">1849</date>, pending the settlement of the questions respecting this claim
in dispute between the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Company</orgName> and H.M. Government.</q> <persName ref="prs:murdoch_twc">Murdoch</persName> writes that
<q>the Agreement concluded with the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Company</orgName> on the <date when="1862-02-03">3rd of February last</date></q> has resolved the issue.

I have to acknowledge your letter of <date when="1862-04-30">24<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> instant</date>, with one from the
Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> in which he suggests that some
arrangement should be come to with the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudson's Bay C<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi></orgName> to allow of
the sale of the Land claimed by them on the ground of occupation
previous to <date when="1849">1849</date>, pending the settlement of the questions respecting
this claim in dispute between the Company and H.M. Government.

2. In reply I have to state that all questions regarding this Land
have been set at rest by the Agreement concluded with the Company on
the <date when="1862-02-03">3<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">rd</hi> of February last</date> which has no doubt been communicated to the
Governor. That Agreement will have put it in the power of the
Governor to dispose of all the Land in the <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Town of Victoria</placeName> not
previously disposed of to others, with the exception of some small
reservations for the Company, and will therefore have exactly met the<pb facs="co_305_19/co_305_19_00402r.jpg"/>
object proposed in his present despatch.
