<salute>Sir,</salute>

<p>
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch No. 2 of the <date when="1862-01-13">13th of January last</date> on the subject of a site for Barracks in <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>.

<p>
The project of sending a Regiment to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>, which led to my request for the Report with which you have now furnished me, has
for the<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">present</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_03/rg7_g8c_03_00035v.jpg"/> present been dropped: but there can be no doubt that it is
proper to reserve a fit site for the future erection of Barracks for
any of H. M's Troops who may be stationed in the Colony. Adverting to
the large extent of the Lands recovered to the Crown under the recent
agreement with the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay Company</orgName> (of which a copy was transmitted
to you with my despatch No. 84 of the <date when="1862-01-24">24th of January last</date>) I
confidently expect that you<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">will</fw><pb facs="rg7_g8c_03/rg7_g8c_03_00036r.jpg"/> will be able, with <persName ref="prs:moody_rc">Colonel Moody</persName>'s
assistance,<!--<pb facs="co_410_01/co_410_01_00186v.jpg"/>--> to select a fitting spot for the purpose on ground belonging to the government. It would be highly unbecoming if, in a
Colony which has been so recently formed, there would be a question of
the necessity of buying the Land required to provide accommodation for
<persName ref="prs:queen_victoria">the Queen</persName>'s Troops.
