In continuation of my despatch of the <date when="1863-05-21">21<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">st</hi> May</date> N<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi> 16, I have the
honor to acquaint Your Grace that with the assistance afforded by
<persName ref="prs:spencer">Commodore Spencer</persName>, the Senior Naval Officer at <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName>,
the active operations described in<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">that</fw><pb facs="co_305_20/co_305_20_00225v.jpg"/> that Despatch for seeking out and
bringing to justice the <name type="ip" subtype="group">Indian Criminals</name> have been very closely, and
I am thankful to say successfully followed up.
</p>
<p>
2. An expedition, under the Command of Commander Hardinge, of Her
Majesty's Ship Cameleon, to aid the civil power was detached to the
Coast, and eventually succeeded in capturing all but one of the
principal Criminals.
</p>
<p>
3. A Copy of <persName ref="prs:hardinge">Commander<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">Hardinge's</fw><pb facs="co_305_20/co_305_20_00226r.jpg"/> Hardinge</persName>'s Report of Proceedings is forwarded
herewith for Your Grace's information.
</p>
<p>
4. The <name type="ip" subtype="group">accused Indians</name> were tried at the Assizes held on the <date when="1863-06-17">17<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">h</hi>
day of June 1863</date>, and a conviction obtained against five of them.

 - For the Murder of one <persName ref="prs:marks_f">Marks</persName> and his
<lb/>
Daughter.

 - For the Murder of one <persName ref="prs:gliddon">Charles Glyddon</persName>

 - For Manslaughter
<milestone unit="section" rend=".ind off"/>
The last named was indicted for the murder of a white man,<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">name</fw><pb facs="co_305_20/co_305_20_00226v.jpg"/> name
unknown, about 5 years ago. He admitted the truth of the evidence as
to the killing, but stated that one , since killed by
<name type="ip" subtype="group">Indians</name>, was the instigator of the deed, and that it was only when
 was being worsted by the white man that he had gone to his
assistance. Even then it would seem that the unfortunate victim
would have overcome both his assailants, had not the wife of 
seized an Axe with which she<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">struck</fw><pb facs="co_305_20/co_305_20_00227r.jpg"/> struck the white man in the back, and
disabled him. He was then stabbed by .  has
been sentenced to Four years imprisonment with hard labor. He is an
old man and may not live to serve out the term.
</p>
<p>
5. The other four <name type="ip" subtype="group">Indians</name> convicted of the Capital crime were
sentenced to death, and were hanged this morning at 7 O'Clock in
front of the Police Barracks at <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>.
</p>

<p>
6. These prompt and vigorous measures were necessary to address an
apparently increasing mania amongst certain <name type="ip" subtype="group">Tribes of Indians</name> to
become great and noted by the commission of crime. I am satisfied
that the whole proceedings from first to last will not only tend to
uproot such evil passions, but will materially conduce to the future
safety of the white population, whether scattered in settlement
around, or passing in solitary journey<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">along</fw><pb facs="co_305_20/co_305_20_00228r.jpg"/> along the Coast.
