<p><persName ref="prs:kennedy_a">Kennedy</persName> forwards <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Douglas</persName>’s letter granting <persName ref="prs:young_wag">Young</persName> <q>twelve months leave of Absence</q>, as well as <q>the Treasurer's certificate of the date to which <persName ref="prs:young_wag">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Young</persName> has received Salary in this Colony.</q> <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName> minutes a suggestion that the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> find out <q>the amount of inconvenience</q> this causes <persName ref="prs:kennedy_a">Kennedy</persName> before the leave is <q>confirmed.</q>

Secretary of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>, together with the Treasurer's
certificate of the date to which <persName ref="prs:young_wag">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Young</persName> has received Salary in
this Colony.

the same eyes as <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Sir J.D.</persName> I daresay <persName ref="prs:kennedy_a"><choice><abbr>Gov<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi></abbr><expan>Governor</expan></choice> Kennedy</persName> will not altogether
regret his absence for a while.

You will observe that <persName ref="prs:kennedy_a">Governor Kennedy</persName> scrupulously abstains from
recommending a confirmation of the leave or from saying<pb facs="co_305_22/co_305_22_00218r.jpg"/> anything at
all about it, except that he found it already granted by his
Predecessor. I suppose that <persName ref="prs:young_wag">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Young</persName> will call here and report
himself. I confess that it seems to me open to some doubt whether
the leave should be at once confirmed for a whole twelvemonth: I
should feel rather inclined to ask <persName ref="prs:kennedy_a">Governor Kennedy</persName> the amount of
 inconvenience to which it may put him. <seg type="snippet" xml:id="V64123_snippet_1"><persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Sir J. Douglas</persName>'s conduct has
been equally irregular and indelicate, and borders very closely upon
a deliberate act of disrespect to his successor</seg>; and whatever else be
done, I think that no secret of this need be made to <persName ref="prs:young_wag">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Young</persName>.
