<p><persName ref="prs:layard">Layard</persName> forwards a report indicating that a telegraph line from <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName>, destined for <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName> and <placeName ref="plc:british_columbia">British Columbia</placeName>, has reached <placeName ref="plc:olympia">Olympia</placeName>. <persName ref="prs:elliot_tf">Elliot</persName>’s minute authorizes <persName ref="prs:blackwood_aj">Blackwood</persName> to inform the Governor of British North America that once the line is complete it will allow communication from the maritime colonies to the Pacific.</p>

of <persName ref="prs:cardwell">M<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">r</hi> Secretary Cardwell</persName> the accompanying copy of a despatch which
has been received from Her Majesty's Consul at <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName>,
reporting that a telegraph line has been completed to <placeName ref="plc:olympia">Olympia</placeName>.

I think there is a line of telegraph between <placeName ref="plc:san_francisco">San Francisco</placeName>,
<placeName ref="plc:washington_city">Washington</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:new_york">New York</placeName> &amp; Boston. From Boston we know there is a line
to <placeName ref="plc:halifax">Halifax</placeName>. As the line is shortly to extend to <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">V.C. Isl<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">d</hi></placeName> a
communication by telegraph will be established, passing however
through American Territory, between our Eastern &amp; Western possessions
in North America.

It might be advisable to apprize the B.N.A. Governors of the fact
stated in this Letter?
