He forwards a report from <q>the Nurseryman in the New Forest, who has charge of these plants.</q> He requests no more seeds or cones sent until <q>the result of the present parcel shall have been ascertained.</q>

I have to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the <date when="1864-01-08">8<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">th</hi> instant</date>
with copy of a dispatch from the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver's Island</placeName>
reporting the shipment of a Box containing a further supply of Seed
and Cones of the Douglas Pine and I have to request that you will
express my thanks to the <persName ref="prs:newcastle">Duke of Newcastle</persName> for his compliance with my
request, and as I believe His Grace takes an interest in the growth
of the Douglasii Pine in this Country I transmit herewith for his
information copy of a report from the Nurseryman in the New Forest,
who has charge of these plants.

<p>
Having regard however to the particulars therein contained I shall be
obliged if the <orgName ref="org:colonial_office">Colonial Office</orgName> will request <persName ref="prs:douglas_j">Governor Douglas</persName> not to
collect any more seed for the Office of Woods until the result of the
present parcel shall have<fw type="catchword" style="text-align: right;">been</fw><pb facs="co_305_24/co_305_24_00173v.jpg"/> been ascertained.
