<persName ref="prs:murdoch_twc">Murdoch</persName>, from the <orgName ref="org:emigration_office">Emigration Board</orgName>, encloses a letter from the <q>Hudsons Bay</q> Company, agreeing to repay the amount the company received for selling a portion of the public Park at <placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>. In order to obtain the details around the sale of the public park land, <persName ref="prs:murdoch_twc">Murdoch</persName> suggests contacting <q><persName ref="prs:seymour_f">the Governor</persName> of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName>.</q> <persName ref="prs:rogers_f">Rogers</persName> minutes instructions to first contact <persName ref="prs:kennedy_a">Kennedy</persName>, <q>now in England,</q> and then the authorities on <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouver Island</placeName>. Included documents describe the difficulty in confirming the amount the Hudson’s Bay Company received and instruct Emigration Commissioners to contact <persName ref="prs:kennedy_a">Kennedy</persName> for information regarding the sale of the park lands.

 With reference to your letter of <date when="1867-01-02">2<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">nd</hi> inst</date>, I enclose herewith the
copy of a letter from the <orgName ref="org:hbc">Hudsons Bay C<hi style="vertical-align: super; font-size: 80%;">o</hi></orgName>, agreeing to repay the
amount received by them for the portion of the <placeName ref="plc:beacon_hill">public Park</placeName> at
<placeName ref="plc:victoria">Victoria</placeName>, <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName>, which was sold in error, but proposing
that the amount to be repaid should be determined by us. We have
no means of ascertaining the exact extent of the land alienated, or
the sum received for it and we would, therefore, suggest that if
<persName ref="prs:carnarvon">Lord<pb facs="co_305_30/co_305_30_00198v.jpg"/> Carnarvon</persName> should approve of the proposal of the Company to
leave in our hands the decision as to the amount to be reclaimed,
the Governor of <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Vancouvers Island</placeName> should be requested to obtain the
most precise and accurate information that can be procured on that
point, for our assistance in forming a decision.
</p>
<p>
2. In the meantime the preparation of the Deed for the retransfer
of the <placeName ref="plc:vancouver_island">Island</placeName> need not be interrupted.
