I have the honor to transmit to you copies of a correspondence with the Patent Office, from which you will learn that at the request of Mr. E.G. Alston, the Registrar General of Van Couver Island, the Commissioners of Patents have presenteda a complete set of their Publications to the Colonial Government.

You will perceive from Mr. Alston's letter, a copy of which accompanies this despatch, that he applied for the Works of the Mechanics Institute, of which he is the honorary Secretary, but as the Commissioners have given them to the local Government, it will rest with that Government to determine whether or not they shall be deposited there. But if it is decided that the works shall be placed in the Institute it shouldbe be clearly understood that they remain the property of the Colonial Government.

I have to request that you will communicate a copy of the despatch to Mr. Alston who has left this Country Van Couver Island.

The Crown Agents will be directed to forward the Publications to you by the first opportunity.
