I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her
Majesty's Treasury to acquaint you, for the information
of
Sir E.B. Lytton with reference to his letter of the
19th
Ultimo,
that My Lords have authorized the Commissioners of Inland Revenue to
repay to
Mr P. Smith, Chief Clerk in the Colonial Office, the sums of
£75, being the Stamp Duty on the Letters Patent, dated the
2nd
September 1858, for erecting
British Columbia into a Colony and
appointing
James Douglas Esqr to be Governor thereof, and £50 being
the Stamp Duty on a Warrant appointing
Mr Begbie to be Judge of the
Colony.
My Lords have also authorized the Paymaster General to pay to
Mr P. Smith the sum of £39.17.4, in repayment of the advance made by him on
account of the expenses of issuing the above Letters Patent, charging the
amount to Civil Contingencies.
