King to Under-Secretary of State
Carmarthen
September 15th 1858
Sir,
Having done myself the honor to address a Letter to His Royal Highness the Comr in Chief soliciting the indulgence of Remission money in the purchase of Land to which officers upon Retiring from the Army are sometimes admitted—and having selected British Columbia as the Colony to which I purpose Emigrating with my family, Major Genl Sir C. Yorke informs me in reply in a Letter dated 15th inst:, that he cannot satisfactorily answer my question as it is not known whether the Colony of British Columbia is one of those in which these advantages will be accorded to officers of the Army—and recommends me to apply to the Colonial Office. May I request the honor of being informed if there is any obstacle to the accomplishment of my wishes, my past Military Service qualifying me for the indulgence.
I beg to intimate that I embark on 25th inst: for British Columbia and should no reply be sent before that period my address will be care of Capt:Manuscript image Richards R.N. H.M.S. "Plumper" Vancouvers Island.
I have the honor to be Sir,
Your most obedient Servant
E. Hammond King
Late Paymaster 59th Regt

The ansr is that the attention of the Governor has been directed to the propriety of granting remissions on the purchase of Land to retired Officers of the Army & Navy, who are disposed to settle in B. Columbia, & that a report has been required from the Governor onManuscript image that subject. Until that report has been recd & the project carefully considered by H.M. Govt it is impossible to give the writer any definite ansr to his enquiry.
