I have to acquaint you that the Queen has been graciously pleased to confer upon you the distinction of a Companion of the Order of the Bath.

In recommending you for that mark of Royal Favor I have felt that it was only due to you that your successful administration of the Govt of Vancouver's Island should not pass unnoticed, and I beg leave to assure you that in installing you in your new and more difficult Govt. of British Columbia, I have personally felt much gratification from HMs condescension in publicly marking your previous services with Her Royal approbation.
