Sir,
I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your Despatch of the 11th November 1858 No 38 upon the subject of the escape of Mr Brew, Chief Commissioner of Police in British Columbia, from the steamer "Austria" destroyed by fire on the voyage to New York.

I have informed Mr Brew of the kind sympathy you have manifested at the disasters which befel him, and it has given me sincere satisfaction to communicate to him the considerate act on the part of Her Majesty's Government in granting him the sum of one hundred pounds (£100) to re-imburse him for the losses he has sustained.
