I have duly received Your Despatch No 40 of the 1st April, enclosing the Copy of a note from the Duc de Malakoff to Lord Malmesbury requesting informationManuscript imageinformation as to the fate of a French subject named Jean Baptiste Massenot supposed to have arrived at Victoria in June last, and I have the honor to acquaint you in reference thereto, that we have used every exertion to obtain the information desired.
2. I beg herewith to enclose the Copy of a letter, I have just receivedManuscript imagereceived from a Mr Thornton, a legal gentleman, who is conducting the enquiries in reference to M. Massenot and who has discovered some traces of him in the mining districts of Frasers River.
