Sir,
I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 19th of February reporting that attempts are being made by certain American citizens to survey and occupy the Island of San Juan in the Gulf of Georgia.
I enclose for your information and guidance the copy of a correspondencewithManuscript image with the Foreign Office on this subject and I have to instruct you to pursue the course indicated by the Earl of Malmesbury for maintaining the rights of the British Crown to the Island.
